The Konica company pre-dates Kodak in the photographic industry, and traces it's origins back to 1873 when a pharmacist named Rokusaburo Sugiura began selling photographic materials in his shop.
It was in 2003 that the Konica company merged with Minolta to form Konica-Minolta. However, in January of 2006 Konica-Minolta announced it would be quitting the camera business because of high financial losses. As of 2007, Konica-Minoltas SLR camera operations were handed over to Sony, where they will develop cameras that are compatible with Minolta lenses.
Furthermore, in September of 2007 Konica-Minolta plans to get out of the photography industry altogether, quitting their production and service of color film, color paper, photo chemicals and digital mini-lab machines.
