Nikon being a company that specializes in optics and imaging, is therefore one of the most qualified companies in the world to produce high quality cameras and digital camera products.
Nikon was founded in 1917, but at the time was called Nihon (Nippon). It wasn't until 1988 that the company adopted the name Nikon, named after the companies camera line. Today, Nikon Cameras are part of the Mitsubishi umbrella of companies. The actual name Nikon dates back to 1946 and is a combination of Nippon KÅgaku which means "Japan Optical."
Some of the more popular products in the Nikon camera line are it's Nikkor camera lenses, the Nikon F pro 135 film SLR cameras, and their Nikon D digital SLR cameras. Nikon introduced its Coolpix line of cameras, both consumer and prosumer, which helped make the world of photography go digital. The company today employs over 17,000 workers around the globe. In 2006, Nikon announced they would focus only on their line of digital cameras from now on, and discontinue the majority of the companies film camera models as well as all of its large format lenses. However, the Nikon company will continue to produce two film cameras, it's lower-end FM10 and the more expensive F6. Likewise, the company has also committed to providing customer service on all of the discontinued Nikon film cameras for a 10 year period after production is ceased. This speaks volumes of Nikon's credibility as a top-notch camera company.
